Zero trust replaces implicit network trust with continuous verification. Every user, device and service receives only the access it needs, regardless of whether the connection originates in the office, at home or in the cloud.

For an SME, the practical foundation is identity first: multi-factor authentication, managed devices, separate administrator accounts and role-based permissions. Logging and short access reviews make unusual behaviour and accumulated privileges visible.

Adoption works best in stages. Inventory critical systems and data, protect the highest-risk access paths, test recovery and then tighten policies with employees rather than surprising them with controls that obstruct normal work.
